WHAT IS WISDOM
What is wisdom?
How do we get it?
Is wisdom a person?
Is it required for eternal life?
Wisdom is a very interesting subject, God tells us through His word to get wisdom and to get understanding.
HOW DO WE GET WISDOM
Job chapter 28 has some very interesting information contained in it regarding wisdom, let’s look at some of the verses from there.
Job 28:12 “But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
It cannot be bought or compared in value to the following items of value.
Job 28:15 It cannot be purchased for gold, Nor can silver be weighed for its price.
Job 28:16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx or sapphire.
Job 28:17 Neither gold nor crystal can equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for jewellery of fine gold.
God knows the place where wisdom may be found.
Job 28:23 God understands its way, And He knows its place.
Notice how we get wisdom.
Job 28:28 And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”
Notice it is given by God.
Job 38:36 Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart?
God gives wisdom if we ask for it in faith.
Jas 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
Jas 1:6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
Again, we see God gives wisdom.
2Ch 9:23 And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.
The beginning of wisdom is to fear God.
Psa 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.
Ecc 7:12 For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.
IS WISDOM A PERSON
Even though in some scriptures it appears that wisdom is a woman, it is also made plain that wisdom is a spirit sent from God into a person’s heart.
Pro 8:1 Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice?
Pro 8:2 She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet.
Pro 8:3 She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors:
Pro 8:4 “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.
Pro 8:5 O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart.
Pro 8:6 Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things;
Pro 8:7 For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
Pro 8:8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.
Pro 8:9 They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.
Pro 8:10 Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold;
Pro 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.
Pro 8:12 “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion.
WHAT IS WISDOM
Wisdom is a spirit from God, given to those who fear God, who ask God for it, who depart from evil, who love knowledge and understanding.
Pro 2:10 When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
Pro 2:11 Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you,
Pro 2:12 To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things,
Pro 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Pro 4:4 He also taught me, and said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, and live.
Pro 4:5 Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
Pro 4:6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you.
Pro 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.
IS IT REQUIRED FOR ETERNAL LIFE?
Pro 8:34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.
Pro 8:35 For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD;
Pro 8:36 But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death.”
